Karneef
Québec
Karneef
Karneef is a bedroom jazz alchemist—a Montréal-based sonic shapeshifter who bends time, tone, and tenderness into something utterly his own. His latest transmission, It’s How You Say It is a velvet-drenched voyage through fractured funk galaxies, soul-soaked nebulae, and jazz dimensions where rhythm has its own gravitational pull. Imagine if Weather Report, Thundercat, and BADBADNOTGOOD hosted a séance with George Duke on synth duty—and you’re getting close. Sort of.
With a voice like melted cassette tape and grooves that slither between the cracks of genre, Karneef doesn’t just play music. Together with his group of collaborators—names like Louis Cole collaborator Anatole Muster, Logan Kane (Fievel Is Glauque, Thumpasaurus), Adam Ratner (KNOWER, Genevieve Artadi), saxophonist Nicole McCabe (Dolphin Hyperspace), and guitarist Brad Barr (The Barr Brothers)—he conjures soundscapes where saxophones sigh, drums get existential, and basslines shamelessly flirt with the moon. His compositions are equal parts retrofuturistic and deliciously off kilter, stitched together with analog warmth and a healthy dose of surreal wit.
Where fellow travellers like Kamaal Williams explore smoky noir jazz and Moses Sumney spins airy soul experiments, Karneef brings the party to the mothership—then reroutes it through a kaleidoscope of cosmic daydreams. It’s How You Say It isn’t just an album—it’s a mood ring for your mind, a jazz-funk oracle whispering sweet riddles in the key of “huh?” Cool, clever, and just a little bit weird, Karneef’s music is for those who like their soul deep, their jazz celestial, and their reality slightly melted.
